Testimonial #17: The Wolf has some more work stories for us
I don't condone any practices that Best Buy subscribes to in deceiving customers. I don't believe in selling something that somebody doesn't want. I work for them because I needed the money and I was offered the position. The pay really sucks, and the employees are mostly young kids - empty-headed, desperate to prove themselves to superiors, and mostly woefully uneducated about the vast majority of products they sell. When it comes to pay... I'm 25, with a 4-year degree in XXX from the University of XXX. I make $7.80 an hour... literally crap for pay. I work there because it's steady and the customers I've dealt with always thank me, ask my name because they want to deal with me (even after I tell them we don't make commission), and shake my hand. I truly believe that honesty is the best policy. I work there because I was desperate for a job and deep in debt with no money.
Yes, I am a slightly bitter employee... especially since most of the young employees are typical young kids - backbiting, backstabbing, and blatant idiots.
XXXX
Another employee I know bought a pair of FRS radios that were $24.99 with a $30.00 mail in rebate... he was accused of taking advantage of the system because the price label was a misprint and no one noticed for about 2-3 days.
I hate the political BS in the store. They say they want you to have a certain "amount of autonomy in making decisions", then they write you up and accuse you of not following procedure when you demonstrate that which they want you to do in the first place. Autonomy?? I'd expect Best Buy to be owned by Saddam Hussein.........
One other thing... you know how you said that the rep told you that if you smashed it into 20 pieces that they would reluctantly replace it? Extended Warranties do NOT cover abuse issues (flushing down a toilet, smashing it, running over it, even repeatedly dropping it - with more than moderate case damage) - it's even stated in the warranties... not to mention that Best Buy technically HAS to honor all manufacturer's warranties in their store for the length of the warranty *AND* I was told by my supervisor that a customer could still come in *any time* within the manufacturer's warranty to buy an Extended Warranty through Best Buy - not just during the 30 day satisfaction guarantee. I'll double check that, but I *was* told that. Also... a comment I read about Best Buy not selling products that have consistent known defects - that's a lie too... We sell Panasonic home phones which are known to totally destroy their rechargeable batteries and not hold a charge at all within 2-3 months. I see returns on those EVERY day...
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask... I'll try and find out the answers for you - provided that it is not sensitive company info - I do have a duty to maintain to my job.
And as for commission - typical employees do not receive commission OR bonuses - only the supervisors of each of the departments receives a bonus should all of the sales goals in his/her department be met or exceeded... all supervisors and his/her superiors make the extras... I myself see nothing but my hourly wage... that's why they put the pressure on us to sell...
As for Circuit City - I have no problem with them... I don't know their practices, but from recent info, Circuit City switched to a non-commission based pay like Best Buy back on February 5th if I remember right. I'm going to wait to see if they start acting like us when the only extra money THEIR management makes is based upon total overall performance also and not sale by sale.
